A symbol of unity and bravery
June 7 marks the anniversary of the Battle of Arica, where Colonel Francisco Bolognesi and his troops made their final stand. His last words — "I will fight to the last cartridge" — remain a symbol of loyalty and honor for all Peruvians.
Flying the flag is not just about remembering our heroes — it’s also about exploring the land they defended.

What to do on Flag Day?
Arequipa: Main Square and Cathedral
At the heart of the “White City” lies one of Peru’s most beautiful plazas. On Flag Day, solemn flag-raising ceremonies and civic activities take place in front of the grand Cathedral — a monument to faith and republican history. You can also visit nearby museums and colonial mansions that echo Arequipa’s fight for liberty.
Ayacucho – Pampa de la Quinua
This historical sanctuary was the site of the Battle of Ayacucho, which sealed South America’s independence from Spain. Walking across the Pampa de la Quinua on June 7th is an act of homage to freedom. The imposing obelisk, surrounded by serene Andean nature, is the perfect place to reflect on the cost and meaning of liberty.
Tacna – Alto de la Alianza Monument
Tacna is known for its deep patriotic spirit. The Alto de la Alianza Monument honors the fighters of the War of the Pacific, especially the heroes of the Battle of Arica — the very reason behind Flag Day. The museum and large esplanade host civic events each June 7th. Being there is like breathing living history.
Cusco – Sacsayhuamán Fortress
Though its origins are pre-Hispanic, Sacsayhuamán represents the strength, resistance, and identity of the Peruvian people. Visiting this fortress on Flag Day is a tribute to our roots. From its heights, you can see the entire city of Cusco beneath you — flying the multicolored Andean flag — while you carry the red and white that unites Peru’s cultures.
Lima – Reducto No. 2 Park, Miraflores
This park honors Lima’s resistance during the War of the Pacific. Surrounded by green spaces, historic cannons, and a commemorative chapel, it hosts official ceremonies every June 7th. Visiting Reducto No. 2 is perfect for reconnecting with the past without leaving the city — and teaching younger generations the meaning of sacrifice for the nation.
