Paucartambo is the capital of the province of the same name, located in the Department of Cusco, at the banks of the Mapacho River. The area was occupied long before the spanish conquest and served an important role for both the Inca Empire and the Spanish Viceroyalty, being an important trade hub between the Andes and the Amazonia.
The city has an impressive colonial architecture in a excellent conservation state. Due to this, its streets were named Historical Monuments of Peru in July 1980. The city is also known for its anual Feast of the Virgen del Carmen, one of the biggest celebrations in all Peru which attracts both local and international tourists.
