Yungay is a city located in the Ancash Region, in the central part of the Callejón de Huaylas, approximately 2458 m.a.s.l., near the Santa River. The city was founded by Spanish Conquerors the 4th og August of 1533. The original city suffered great damage due to earthquakes and avalanches. The most recent happened in 1970, and led to the city being rubuilt as New Yungay. The city has a vast history, and plays a vital role in the central andes trade routes. It was the settlement city of different cultures as moche, wari, recuay, chimu and inca, in different historical periods. It’s believed that the name comes from the words “muchic, chin and pot”, that put together mean “closed port”. On the begining of the 20th century the district of Chimbote is created, later that the city had grown during the 19th century, due to the port and commercial activities. The already named Puerto Mayor reached the position of biggest production fishing port of the world on the middle of the 20th century. Even nowadays Chimbote stands out for being the seat of the fishing and iron and steel industries of Peru.
